Interview with PopVulture Magazine
Hello. Thank you for this great opportunity. I hope this covers what you are asking for.
Brian
popVLTR: You've been making moves in Washington, how'd you get into music?
I started as a kid. I always had music in my head and was making up little tunes, so my parents got me into violin in grade school. My grandpa had played and his fiddle was still floating around the family! (Not literally like a spector or anything. lol) I started playing with bluegrass bands when I was 14 and then went on to playing with country then rock and even played in a couple metal bands (locally) then went to punk country and back to country!
popVLTR: Congrats on ' Miss You
', who are some of your influences?
Thank you! (I'm thinking maybe you meant "Goodbye Song". It's going to be in the movie, Dead in 5 Heartbeats) My biggest influence is the Beatles. Lennon and McCartney just nailed it in their songwriting and delivery. They could make a story with meat to it. Charlie Daniels was a huge fiddle influence, Kansas (Leftoverture), Johnny Cash (just about everything he did just has so much down to earth, real heart), Eric Clapton, Led Zepplin, Elton John, Josh Turner, Marty Robbins, Don Williams...the list goes on and on because there were so many bands and solo acts that had songs that really got my attention. Some were cool and some not so cool! lol They just had something that made me listen. Even Beethoven had influence on me. I mean who doesn't recognize the first 4 notes of his 5th symphony!
popVLTR: What are some of your proudest moments in music so far? (events, accomplishments, recognition)
Well, my proudest moment was when I was 12 and my Uncle Bob asked me to learn Turkey in the Straw, I ran upstairs and figured it out and came right back down to play for him and he had this look on his face of total amazement and said, "I didn't expect you to actually learn it, but to learn it in 15 minutes is amazing". It was the one moment that made me realize that "this is what I want to do with my life". At 15 I got to open for Hank Thompson. I didn't really know who he was but when I found out, I was pretty stoked. When I was older, I entered (reluctantly) into a fiddle contest at a local fair where a band I was sitting in with was playing. I entered the contest and all the other contestants dropped out. That got me thinking differently about my fiddle playing. When I got to tour with the Outlaw Carnies and we opened for Hank III was great because I got to actually know the guy and he's was really cool. I entered in the Washington State Grange's Talent contest and got 1st place in vocals and instrumental then got Best of Show overall and that was cool. My other Uncle Bob (on my wife's side) was there and it was pretty exciting. (everyone needs at least one Uncle Bob) Last year, I volunteered to play for a benefit for a local middle school. They lost their sports program and the community was trying to raise the money to get sports back. I did my show and had a drummer backing. During the auction, I was asked to auction off my solo show. I did and it raised $1,575.00 and was the highest auction item. I was absolutely blown away. They have asked me to do the benefit again this year and to have my show in the auction again, which I was more than glad to do. (I love doing community based stuff to help out. Makes it all seem worth so much more) More recently, my original song, "Goodbye Song" was selected to be in the movie, Dead in 5 Heartbeats. The movie about the Hells Angels former president, Sonny Barger. That was HUGE for me. I think my wife had to resize all my hats because my head got too big. lol jk
I entered into a Hard Rock Rising Battle of the Bands against full bands, Metal, Rock, Jazz... and I'm the only Country act. I'm the only solo act and I was shocked that I made it in. It's not over yet though so we'll see how that pans out!
popVLTR: What cool stuff is on the horizon for Brian 'Buck' Ellard? (events, accomplishments, recognition)
We plan on working out a tour in Ireland. There is a radio station that plays my music a lot there, calledbirdhillradio.com. I'm working on a new album with some songs that I'm pretty excited about and waiting to see what the outcome of having my song in the movie brings. I just got asked to be interviewed in Pop Vulture Magazineand that's at the top of my list. As for what else is going to go on, I'm never sure and will just have to wait. My plan is to tour as much as possible and just get my music out there as much as I can.
